How Often Should You Change Tires?

It depends. But there are ways for you to figure out if your tires are still safe or whether you need to get a new set.

Age: Experts say that you should change your tires every 5 to 10 years. After year five, get a qualified professional to inspect them annually.  Make sure you check the spare tire too.

Tread depth: New tires have between 9/32 to 11/32 of an inch of tread on them. If your tires tread depth has reached 2/32, then they’re unsafe. Perform regular measurements and replace the tire when the tread depth reaches 4/32.

Vibrations: If you feel your steering wheel vibrate while driving, it could be because your tires have worn out unevenly. They may also be unbalanced if they’ve not been rotated regularly. If they have been, and there are still vibrations, your tires may be damaged and need replacement.

Tread pattern: Look for tread wear bars. They become visible when the tires wear out. They run across the tire or form between treads and are on an even level with the treads.

Testing: You can conduct simple tests to check whether your tires are due for replacement. An easy one is the quarter test. Place a quarter between the treads with the head pointing towards the tire. If you can see the top of the head, then replace the tires immediately. If you can see most of the head, it’s time to start searching for a new set.

Mileage: New tires last anywhere between 25,000 to 50,000 miles before replacement is required. Check the owner’s manual in case there are specific recommendations or instructions for your car’s tires. Remember to perform check-ups on your car tires regularly. It’s important that you perform regular checks so that you take care of them. Performing all the recommended measures will help lengthen their life and maintain their performance for as long as possible. If you do take proper care of them, balance them, and rotate them, you’ll extend their lives.

Check online for other tests you can perform on your car tires at home. In case you realize that your tires are worn out, replace them.
